Welcome to our Changing the Faces of STEM Initiative, where we proudly host biannual science fairs designed to actively involve students in the captivating world of science, with a special emphasis on empowering Black and Brown students. These science fairs are vibrant celebrations of creativity, curiosity, and scientific ingenuity. Our goal is to ignite a lasting passion for science by offering hands-on exploration and experimentation opportunities for all participants. We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where Black and Brown students feel supported, valued, and inspired to pursue their interests in STEM. Through these engaging science fairs, we aspire to break barriers, promote diversity, and cultivate the next generation of diverse STEM leaders. The Fair

On June 1st and December 14th, 2024, we invite you to join us for our Science Fair, a free and inclusive event open to all students (K-12) in the Black and Brown community. Whether working in groups or participating individually, students are encouraged to showcase their creativity and scientific prowess. This is an opportunity for young minds to explore, innovate, and share their passion for science in a supportive environment. Student STaff position

we're thrilled to offer diverse opportunities for students to actively participate in our upcoming science fair. Whether you're passionate about STEM, enjoy guiding others, or want to inspire through speaking, there's a role for you.

  • Competitive Presenter: Students who produce STEM projects to be judged in the science fair. They compete for awards based on their project's quality, innovation, and presentation.  

  • Curator: Students are responsible for explaining scientific exhibits, which may include items like plasma balls, Sterling engine models, skulls, brain models, and electrical circuits. They help attendees understand the science behind these exhibits.

  • Student Liaisons: These students act as guides and storytellers, explaining why each neighborhood is named after a specific black inventor. They provide a brief history of the person and the projects and exhibits found in their designated area of the science fair.

  • Gift Shop Salesperson or Vendor: Students can contribute by helping run the event's gift shop. They can sell memorabilia, scientific items, games, toys, and other merchandise related to STEM and the event.

  • Speaker: Students with a passion for STEM can take the stage as speakers. They can share insights on why STEM is important for the black community, how STEM can empower African communities, ways to encourage youth involvement in STEM or highlight the contributions of black inventors to STEM.

What project should I present? 

We would like to encourage all participating students to create STEM projects. These disciplines are critical to shaping the future of our society and offer unique opportunities for innovative research and design. By exploring these fields, students will gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing our world today and will be equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to tackle these challenges head-on. We look forward to seeing the creative and groundbreaking ideas of our young scientists.

Science fair presentations rules:

  • Poster board presentations should be no larger than 36 inches by 48 inches.

  • All posters should be free-standing and able to stand upright on a table.

  • All text and images should be legible from a distance of 3 feet or more.

  • Each poster should include a clear and concise title, introduction, background, methods, results, and conclusion.

  • Models or other three-dimensional displays should be no larger than 36 inches in L by 48 W inches.

  • All models should be free-standing and able to stand upright on a table.

  • All models should be stable and not easily knocked over.

  • Each model should include a clear and concise description of its purpose, design, and construction.

  • Participants should be prepared to explain their posters or models to judges and visitors.
